uBlock Origin (uBO) is a wide-spectrum content blocker for Chromium and Firefox that uses little CPU and memory. With the EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Peter Lowe's Blocklist, Online Malicious URL Blocklist, and uBO filter lists, it automatically stops ads, trackers, coin miners, popups, annoying anti-blockers, malware sites, and more. There are lots of other lists that can be used to block even more. You can also use hosts files. uBO uses the code for EasyList filters and adds to it so that it can work with custom rules and filters.
If you think uBO blocks too much, you can quickly remove any filter lists that were already chosen. As a point of reference, when Adblock Plus is first installed, it only turns on the EasyList, ABP filters, and Acceptable Ads.
About uBlock Origin
Raymond Hill, founder, original author, and lead developer of uBlock Origin, made the first uBlock extension in 2014. He started working on it by splitting the codebase of HTTP Switchboard and adding a different blocking extension called uMatrix, which was made for more experienced users. Raymond Hill made the first version of uBlock so that community-maintained block lists could be made. He also added more functions and made the code better so that it met release standards. When it first came out in June 2014, uBlock was only available as an extension for Chrome and Opera. In late 2015, it was made available on other browsers under its current name, uBlock Origin (sometimes written worldwide as uBlock₀).
After this release in 2015, an industry survey by collaborative resource and Sourcepoint found an 833% growth rate over the next 10 months, finishing in August 2016. This was the fastest growth rate of any publicly traded industry software at that time. According to this study, this huge increase was caused by users' desire for "pure" blockers that can work without the "acceptable advertising" program that AdBlock and other industry extensions use.
The uBlock Origin Firefox version quickly gained popularity across the entire ad-blocking industry, with more than 5 million active users. Its Chrome app then gathered over 10 million active users. Then, in December 2016, Nik Rolls, the developer, made uBlock Origin available for the Microsoft Edge browser.
In January 2017, uBlock Origin was added to the sources for Debian 9 and Ubuntu (16.04). Mozilla also named it "Pick of the Month" for its work in the Internet of Things.
As of 2024, founder and lead developer Raymond Hill is still constantly maintaining and adding to uBlock Origin.
As of 2024, the uBlock Origin extension is available for Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Opera, Firefox, and all Safari releases before 13. It is the first open-source, cross-platform browser extension of its kind and has software that was made to work with multiple platforms.
At this time, the uBlock Origin project still flatly refuses donations. Instead, it tells all of its clients, users, and fans to give money to people who keep block lists up to date.
